Sitting Volleyball Open Day 10th September 2006                             Mile End Park Stadium

Text Box: Sitting volleyball club, East London Lynx, has spearheaded the launch of London’s bid to create a Great Britain sitting volleyball team capable of a medal position at the 2012 Paralympics Games. We would like to extend our thanks to Mile End Stadium for playing host to this event, and to our special guest speakers and celebrity’s for giving their valuable time.

The Launch held at Mile End Park Stadium on 10th September and sponsored by Morgan Stanley, included games between international teams from Holland and Slovenia as well as between players from London, Kent and Cambridge. There were also workshops hosted by both Holland’s international team “Volleer” and the Slovenian team “Paras” check out the pictures in our gallery page.

Sitting Volleyball is a fast and exciting game to play and to watch. The adaptation is considered more intense and quicker than its standing format. It is easy and fun to play at a recreational level and also, with greater technical and tactical skills, players have the opportunity for higher representation.

As players sit on the floor, the game has few sports injuries and can easily be played in smaller gymnastic or sport halls, including squash courts. Able-bodied participants have no advantage over disabled, making the game very suitable for integrating able & disabled players.

The Mile End Park Stadium which has recently undergone a £15m facelift, kindly played host to this event in their new sports hall, which was re-opened by the sports minister Richard Caborn in February 2006, and won the LDSA’s Annual Built in Quality Award, for innovation in providing disability access.

The two top visiting international teams Dutch club “Volleer” and Slovenian club “Paras” gave a demonstration of the game in a match which saw “Paras” winning by 2 sets to 1.

The first East London Lynx Training Session will take place on 11th October at Mile End Park Stadium, and from then will take place on the second Wednesday of every month. Sessions are FREE and will cater for all levels of ability , with separate training for under-18’s and adults.
